Which purchase criteria actually drive B2B buying decisions?

Most technical performance criteria in B2B applications are table stakes: every credible supplier meets them. The few criteria that drive the decision and justify a premium are often service, supply or application know-how. Four linked tools show what buyers care about, who is winning, and how to capture the value you create.

    The problem

Technical teams naturally lead with performance data. But if every qualified supplier passes the same specification, performance no longer separates you, and price becomes the tie-breaker.

    The approach

Start with what customers weigh most, score yourself and competitors on those criteria, quantify the value of your advantage against the next-best alternative, and set price on a value map. In our refinery protective coatings example, the deciding criteria were not the ones the technical team expected.

    Our point of view

Differentiation that customers do not value is a cost, not an advantage. Focus investment and messages on the criteria that drive the decision.

    What to do about it

    01

    Separate table stakes from differentiators

Ask customers which criteria decide the purchase once the specification is met.

    02

    Score honestly

Use customer evidence, not internal pride.

    03

    Quantify the gap

Put a value on your advantage on the deciding criteria.

    04

    Set price on value

Position price on the value map, not on cost-plus.
