What does record farm debt mean for agricultural input suppliers?
US net farm income is down about 16% from its 2022 peak while farm sector debt has reached a record, so growers are optimizing return per acre and cutting input costs. Suppliers still optimizing for volume are solving a different problem from their customers. Winning now depends on proving input ROI.
What growers are doing
In crop nutrition, growers are reducing applications and shifting timing from fall to spring. In crop protection, they are skipping “insurance” sprays, adopting generic chemistry and pushing the lower limits of label rates.
Why it matters for suppliers
If growers carrying record debt optimize for return per acre while suppliers optimize for volume, the two sides of the relationship are working on different problems, and price becomes the only conversation.
Our point of view
Commodity price bounces rarely heal structural imbalances. Suppliers who segment growers by economics, quantify value per acre and price on that value will hold margin better than those who wait for the cycle to turn.
What to do about it
Segment by economics
Group growers by debt load, margin pressure and decision style, not just acreage.
Quantify value per acre
Show the return on each input against the grower's next-best alternative.
Check your price position
Use a value map to see where generic alternatives sit.
Equip the channel
Give retailers and agronomists the ROI story, not just the product story.
